Minnie and Moskowitz (1971)

Depressed and jaded after being dumped by her married boyfriend, aging beauty Minnie Moore wonders if she'll ever find love. After shaggy-haired parking lot attendant Seymour Moskowitz comes to her defense from an angry and rebuffed blind date, he falls hopelessly in love with her despite their myriad differences. Minnie reluctantly agrees to a date with Moskowitz, and, slowly but surely, an unlikely romance blossoms between the two.

This one comes too close to home. Not for me, mind you. My mom and my stepdad. That's right. He's a little nuts and I don't get a lot of it. But what I will say is that this movie is ridiculously honest about itself and humanity. I'm gonna add a scene from this movie into the great scenes of cinema. It's the scene where Minnie is a li'l drunk and talking about how the movies disillusion us. It's really the thesis for this movie. No one is as perfect as they are in the movies. Rather, we have guys who think girls will like them if they walk on their hands. Cassavetes has a way of noticing what real people do in intense situatons. What does kind of raise my eyebrows is the fact that Gena Rowlands is almost always abused in all of Cassavetes's movies. Maybe she's good at it, but it's weird knowing their real-life relationship in league with Rowland's fictional characters. Gena Rowlands just keeps moving up my list of favorite actors. Minnie and Moskowitz really secures that spot for me.

Really love this one, probably Cassavettes most accessible film. Falling in love warts and all.

When Minnie and Moskowitz came out, the New York Daily News called it "The best, most charming, and funniest home movie ever made". I don't think I could sum it up any better. There are sequences that you watch with your jaw dropped because they are so perfect, and beautiful, and hilarious. Truly my favorite love story.

"You know I think that movies are a conspiracy? I mean it. I mean it, they are actually a conspiracy because they set you up, Florence." Goddamit if that isn't the truth.

i dont think im a big cassavettes fan. i appreciate the new wave style but its just too dry and subtle. granted, ive only seen a couple of his films...and i didnt actually tun the film off so there was something to it.
