Minnie and Moskowitz (1971)

Depressed and jaded after being dumped by her married boyfriend, aging beauty Minnie Moore wonders if she'll ever find love. After shaggy-haired parking lot attendant Seymour Moskowitz comes to her defense from an angry and rebuffed blind date, he falls hopelessly in love with her despite their myriad differences. Minnie reluctantly agrees to a date with Moskowitz, and, slowly but surely, an unlikely romance blossoms between the two.

Possibly the closest John Cassavetes came to directing a screwball comedy. Minnie and Moskowitz is a tale of misfit love, that runs on improv and the director's efficient sense for making micro-budgeted pictures. While Cassavetes casted his usual slew of actors here (AKA family and friends), the film's focal point is on Gena Rowlands and Seymour Cassell. The two leads certainly have strong chemistry as this dysfunctional couple, but their performances are occasionally over-the-top, perhaps suggesting Cassavetes didn't entirely know if the film should be humorous, or not. Uneven as it is sometimes, Minnie and Moskowitz is a very pleasing and different film from Cassavetes, and one of his most curious ones as well.

I love this film. It's such a fantastic character portrait of a couple who are so volatile and love one another with un-healthy destructive passion. I recommended it to someone a while back and they said, "I couldn't take all the yelling. I had to shut it off in the last ten minutes."

It’s a funny film, and it’s even charming in a shaggy way, but there isn’t a light moment in it—Cassavetes demands that comedy be played as passionately as drama.

Seymour's truck and his delivery of "I think about you so much I forget to go to the bathroom!" were hilarious. I love Minnie's struggle with the embarrassment of introducing Seymour to her acquaintances... She was able to trigger the same feeling in me, and I felt terrible and so guilty! She's a great actor.

The screwiest screwball comedy there is. One of the most unique "true love" stories. Seymour Cassel and Rowlands are truly remarkable.
