Night Catches Us (2010)

After growing up during the tumultuous 1960s, ex-Black Panther Marcus returns to his home in Philadelphia in 1976 and reconnects with Pat, the widow of a Panther leader. Marcus befriends Pat's young daughter and attempts to conquer his demons. Interfering with Marcus's good intentions are the neighborhood's continuing racial and social conflicts, as well as old enemies and friends -- both with scores to settle.

I liked a lot of the aspects of this movie, but it lacked a certain substance for me to really enjoy it. The acting and directing seemed on point and the themes had my attention since I saw the trailer. My problem with the movie is that it doesn't seem to go deep enough into any of the plot elements. Her refusal to leave, the reason he was in town for a week and his family, the panther betrayal, and the cousin's growing anger. All of these were interesting, but the movie doesn't quite give enough "meat" to any of them. Had this movie maybe been half an hour longer or been a little more focused, I can honesly say I would have loved it. I liked the ending. And the characters were appropriate, but just weren't fleshed out enough for me.

Anthony Mackie and Kerry Washington deserve more roles and movies like this one. It'll be interesting to see what Tanya Hamilton does next.

Washington and Mackie both deliver deeply-felt performances in roles that are all about nuance, particularly when the text sometimes fails them.

There's a good movie in here and a unique one at that, based on how underrepresented this time and place in history is in cinema, but Hamilton just does not have a strong enough hand to guide it. The film seems to be playing catch up to its ideas and despite the best efforts of Mackie and Washington, it never really makes it.
