Professor Henri Laborit uses three people's stories to discuss behaviourist theories of survival, combat, rewards and punishment, and anxiety: René is a technical manager at a textile factory and must face the anxiety caused by corporate downsizing; Janine is a self-educated actress/stylist who learns that the wife of her lover is dying and must decide to let them reunite; and Jean is a controversial career-climbing writer/politician at a crossroads in life.

On paper this isn't really my kind of movie by a country mile but I'm always ready to see anything that Depardieu decides to appear in and Nicole Garcia is not too hard to take either if anybody asks you but then you have to factor in Resnais, a loose canon whichever way you slice it, a guy who's as likely to film a Viennese Operetta with a static camera as lay a metaphysical treatise on an unsuspecting audience. He's also something of a risk-taker and here he does himself no favors in the opening minutes by giving the impression we've wandered into a lecture complete with lantern-slides. But soon you find yourself drawn into the three loosely connected stories and a little later you find you've surrendered completely to the left-handed charm. Not for the faint-hearted or the popcorn brigade.

As a fan of Resnais, I found this character study film quite brilliant and entertaining. evolutionary psychology. interesting how all the stories intersect.

im grunde ein behavioristischer thesenfilm - oder doch nicht...? resnais ist im grunde zu schlau, um das hier zur bloÃ?en versuchsanordnung zu machen, und so bleibt dann auch bei aller vorgeblichen akademischen nÃ¼chternheit der eindruck zurÃ¼ck, der eigentliche film habe sich zwischen den zeilen abgespielt.

Amusing French film that focuses on three individuals who seemed to be connected through a deserted island off the coast of their small town. One young man (Gerard Depardieu) expresses generally dislike towards his job in a textile factory. The other man (Roger Pierre) begins dating an actress (Nicole Garcia) who seems to be resistant of his affection and at the same time, has a fling with the other individual. Despite the film being rather upbeat, everyone seems miserable and also somehow get back to the island for which their ancestors had landed on. Weird and bit confusing at times, but still quite entertaining and well performed by the cast.
