I've heard great things about Claude Chabrol for years. Is this not a good movie to base an opinion from? Because it's ponderous to the point of glacial, deeply uninteresting, and has only a few well-acted roles to redeem it.

Cranking out a movie a year, Chabrol is having a serious case of Woody Allen syndrome. He's been kicking around the same stately, vaguely perverse thrillers for thirty years.
