Munich (2005)

During the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, eleven Israeli athletes are taken hostage and murdered by a Palestinian terrorist group known as Black September. In retaliation, the Israeli government recruits a group of Mossad agents to track down and execute those responsible for the attack.

Spielberg is to be commended and admired for his masterful handling of such heady topics. Realistic, chaotic, unprovoked violence will always be more powerful and impressionable than even the most stylized of violence. The film increases in intensity as it goes on when depicting the moral struggle of justifying revenge and vengeance and its irremovable presence for all of mankind's existence. The powerful performances, washed-out but distinct cinematography and locations, together with Spielberg's adept use of comedy, drama, and thrill and John Williams' effectively simple music add up to be, for me, one of Spielberg's best and most mature efforts.

Next to Schindler's List and E.T., this is one of Spielberg's best movies and shows his great strength as not only a director but most importantly as a story teller. This movie is a hybrid of a suspense thriller with psychological character drama of what this secret squad does after that terrible day at the 1972 Olympics. Spielberg's use of imagery is subtle, precise and memorable much like an assassins bullet. One of the most memorable series of scenes in the movie is takes place at a Safe House that is housing both the Secret Israeli and Palestine assassins where they are both trying to find something to listen to on the radio. It's a wonderful turning point in the movie that have me reflect on this historical battle between the two cultures and have me question every motive from that point forward.
