Mulholland Dr. (1999)

The original TV pilot version of Mulholland Drive, telling the story of an amnesiac woman in Los Angeles who sets out to uncover the secrets of her own past with the help of a wannabe actress. Filmed in early 1999 and never aired, this version has only ever circulated in bootleg form. Additional photography took place in late 2000 and the pilot material was reworked into the 2001 feature film.

Sunset Boulevard, All about Eve and so Mulholland Dr. for a modern and chilling attack on The American movie business. The pandoras box of the movie world. The hollowness that lurks behind the smiling faces. The devouring drug that is the desire for fame. I will always imagine that goblin lurking in the shadows of Hollywood. Dont mind the time shifts or the non-sense or what is real or unreal. Revel in, what was for me, the crazed mind of an innocent aspiring actress destroyed by the darker side of desire in a world of fickle elitists..Lynch's atmospherics and characters are unsettling and mesmerising. Original Masterpiece. I'm off to watch more Lynch.

I originally saw this at the Toronto Film Festival sitting directly in front of Justin Theroux and Laura Harring. David Lynch was there, but they warned him I would stalk him and so I didn't actually see him properly. There are few words one can use to describe this film. It incorporates every genre into one film. Halway in, it completely changes leaving the viewer a lifetime to figure out what it was all about. But I loved it. Like Lynch's other films, everything is rock solid. The soundtrack is ideal for this film. The story, performances, editing... everything is just dead-on. It's like Lynch set-out to show how to make a perfect movie and accomplished its task. If not for Wild at Heart, this could possibly be the best movie ever made. In my opinion, anyway.

However you interpret it, Lynch's film is a spellbinding experience. Crushingly beautiful and visually alluring, Mulholland Drive is a self-aware Hollywood masterpiece.

A masterpiece. One of my favorite movies ever. David Lynch writes and directs it perfectly. Naomi Watts gives an amazing performance and handles all the roles superbly. The story is complicated enough and needs a couple of views to become understandable, yet you can't possibly understand it all; it's that weird. Very highly recommended.

"Mulholland Drive" by David Lynch is an important film to study for anyone that is interested in either psychology or narrative conventions, and that is due to the fact that it is unlike most films. That is, to say, the film does not hold the viewer by the hand and make sure they understand it. "Mulholland Drive" is akin to one being thrown in a pitch-dark room full of knickknacks and furniture. The only way the person will learn the objects in the room is by his or her desire to investigate, but not with sight. "Mulholland Drive" presents all its facts, but only those who desire investigation will be the ones discovering a truly traumatic yet fascinating psychological tale of heartbreak, jealousy, guilt and revenge.
