Schnabel's taken a different tack from earlier films, plunging us into Vincent's POV, trying to get us to experience the world as Vincent saw it, revealing his painter's eye. While his results are mixed, some sequences soar...

In this biopic, Willem Dafoe plays Vincent van Gogh, and I must say that he embodies him and his attention to detail and beauty very well. However, the cinematography was rather clumsy and awkward to me, as it shook around and seemed very unfocused quite a bit, and while this seemed to be deliberate in order to express van Gogh's mental state throughout the film, it simply proved a little too distracting for my liking. Overall, it's pretty standard in terms of a biopic, but the always reliable Dafoe really does turn in a highly realized and detailed look at the iconic painter, making it just worthwhile enough.

If Eternity is hardly a completist portrait — or even a narratively satisfying one, really — it’s still gratifying to watch in other ways. Not just for the pureness of Dafoe’s performance but for the way it lets art be both celebrated and unexplained, still as much a mystery as the man who made it.
