Micro Men (2009)

In 1979 Clive Sinclair, British inventor of the pocket calculator, frustrated by the lack of home investment in his project, the electric car, also opposes former assistant Chris Curry's belief that he can successfully market a micro-chip for a home computer. A parting of the ways sees Curry, in partnership with the Austrian Hermann Hauser and using whizz kid Cambridge students, set up his own, rival firm to Sinclair Radionics, Acorn. Acorn beat Sinclair to a lucrative contract supplying the BBC with machines for a computer series. From here on it is a battle for supremacy to gain the upper hand in the domestic market.

Interesting flick into the history of British computing that sparked the memory synapses. Coming off like a UK version of Pirates of Silicon Valley, this film tells the battle between Chris Curry (Acorn Computers) and Clive Sinclair (Sinclair Computers) to introduce personal computing to the UK at an affordable price. At times Alexander Armstrong played Sinclair a bit too much like a comedy character and would have preferred he tone it down, even though Sinclair was a despicable man. Freeman as Curry is good, but overshadowed by Armstrong's histrionics.

A little great movie about magical times. Times before people were talked into thinking that any creative idea has to come from Silicon Valley. That "Sinclair Research Ltd." screen is engraved in my memory forever. I had so much fun watching this movie!

So great, we named a band after a quote from it.

4 out of 5 - The early days of computing is more fascinating than one would expect, and this recreation of the story of rivalry between Sinclair (Spectrum) and Curry (Acorn / BBC Micro) is riveting, amusing and very well made. Place and time are captured eloquently, with strong performances by Alexander Armstrong as the incredibly eccentric and egotistical Sir Clive, and "The Office"'s Martin Freeman as Chris Curry. Evocative soundtrack score.
