Very entertaining recreation of the 1937 production of Julius Caesar, the first show performed by the Mercury Theater. Christian McKay is absolutely uncanny as Welles. Great behind the scenes story follows a fictional character played by Zac Efron, who does a fine job as a talented but naive young actor cast in a small part in the play. Well done in every way. Fascinating script. Excellent cast. Great sets. Fantastic soundtrack. Well worth seeing and plays well on home video. Hughly recommended.

Patented Linklater great dialogue, along with fantastic performances all around, make this a truly enjoyable and highly entertaining film.

An enjoyable -- albeit never brilliant or fully developed -- film from Richard Linklater. Good for him -- I was beginning to have serious doubts that he should be allowed to call himself a director (Bad News Bears, anyone?). I'm not sure that inclusion of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar was as effective as it could have been, and I'm very sure that the film would've been 100 times better had it been a musical... Zac Efron was nice to look at, as always, but there wasn't much else from him. His charm is on the verge of becoming smug. I respect that he's trying to branch out to more serious films, but I'd like to see him play a different type of character for once. Christian McKay was very good as Orson Welles, though the screenplay didn't deliver the kind of character depth that I was expecting. All in all, a very good, slightly watered-down, film that I wouldn't mind watching a few more times for the entertainment value, now that I know not to expect anything ground-breaking.

Enjoyed this one, but still can't view Zac Efron as anything other than a Disney bred teen idol. Has a long way to go before proving himself a serious actor. Able supporting cast, with a story that flowed well. Visually appealing too.

Here is a film that has both an excellent story, fine production values and a feast of fine acting. Moreover it is a film that anyone with an interest in film history will find both absorbing and illuminating about Welles' career in Nwew York prior to his move to the west coast to start work on 'Citizen Kane'. The man who, as a film director, was critics' darling but box office poison, is shown wowing both public and press with his production of 'Caesar'. No one who has seen Richard Linklater's earlier films will be surprised by the care and sympathy with which he depicts his characters, both the famous (Welles, Joseph Cotton, George Coulouris, John Houseman) and fictitious ('Me') or the care with which he observes depression-era New York yet maintains a lightness and humour that convinces as a portrait of a highly talented theatre company gathered like moths round the radiance of Welles' wayward genius. The only advice is to get to see this movie early so you urge your friends to see it - and go with them for a second visit.
