Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles (2014)

The extraordinary life of Orson Welles (1915-85), an enigma of Hollywood, an irreducible independent creator: a musical prodigy, an excellent painter, a master of theater and radio, a modern Shakespeare, a magician who was always searching for a new trick to surprise his audience, a romantic and legendary figure who lived only for cinema.

Fantastic summing up documentary, leaving you wanting more. Could have even 3 hours long and still not overstayed its welcome.

As a primer for newcomers to the Orson Welles universe, the superficial Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles does its job well.

Stephanie Zacharek 09 Dec 2014

Sturdy and rudimentary, Magician may be Welles 101, but it's dotted liberally with TV and radio clips of the famously loquacious auteur talking, talking, and doing more talking — and how could anybody with ears and a brain resist that buttery voice, spinning out clause-laden sentences that take more twists and turns than the streets of Venice but always end, somehow, in a place that's ravishingly articulate?

If director Chuck Workman maps a familiar rise and fall of rule-breaking brilliance it is vindicated by the great raconteur and in-depth praise from an impressive roster.

David Jenkins 01 Jul 2015

A passible Welles hagiography which offers very little that you couldn't easily find in an Encyclopedia.
