While vacationing in europe, a young womans father unexpededly dies. When she returns home, we discover her mom is a complete bitch and she feels alone. Enter Helmut, who sweeps her off her feet but as we the audience soon realize, Helmut is a complete psychopath. R.W. Fassbinder creates a terrifying film about spousal abuse, both psychical and mental. The camerawork is beautiful as the camera precisely shows up exactly what is neccessary in a very artistic, yet simplistic way. Barbara Valentin gives an amazing performance as the title character, Martha, and by the end of the film you, the audience member, is just in so much pain for her.

Psychological sadism, German style! In Fassbinder's hands, the themes of Cornell Woolrich have never been so cold or cruel. The ending has a nice Kubrickian observational emotional detachment. This is one chilling and creepy film.

Very powerful film. I was watching it on DVD and had to pause it to go to the toilet. Upon pausing it I could tell by the reader on the DVD that I was only one third through the film and Martha had been dealt so much fear and pain that I thought "Hell, what more sadism is there to come?" Answer: Lots! The male lead (Martha's husband) is terrifying. This, for me, is true horror. Vampires and zombies are nonsense. You watch Martha and feel that such a thing could easily be happening to a stranger who lives on the same road as you. Thats the sort of horror that really affects.

Fassbinder goes in a 'mad-bourgeois-thriller' mode, scrutininsing a marriage that can best be described as sadomachostic. This is one of my favourite Fassbinder films, it is amazing!
