Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011)

After several years of living with a cult, Martha finally escapes and calls her estranged sister, Lucy, for help. Martha finds herself at the quiet Connecticut home Lucy shares with her new husband, Ted, but the memories of what she experienced in the cult make peace hard to find. As flashbacks continue to torment her, Martha fails to shake a terrible sense of dread, especially in regard to the cult's manipulative leader.

One of the most interesting films I've ever seen. It really makes you think, and Elizabeth Olsens performance is pure perfection a nuanced and layered performance that deserved an oscar nomination. The way she attempts to transition to normal everyday life is interesting and thought provoking. You see a broken woman who is lost in a world she did not understand.

Subtle story telling at its best that allows the viewer to become immersed in our protagonist's increasing paranioa. This is a great film.... Sean Durkin, delivers a film that examines cult behaviour which becomes a truly scary and uncomfortable experience, flitting back and forward in time we follow Olson's Martha as she attempts to leave the abusive cult that she has fallen in with. Its really effective stuff and there are moments which are genuinely creepy, particularly the ending which manages to evoke real dread without focussing on anything in particular. Olsen is really terrific in this film and when you chuck in the always brilliant John Hawkes as the leader of this cult who is both charming and hugely intimidating again without being really overt about it. This is a really immersive story which is film making at its best....

A year has past since I first watched this film and with the exception of one or two, not a film has come close. Second to none storytelling and a powerful yet unpretentious performance by Olsen. Outrageously overlooked.

Olsen gives a magnificently ambiguous performance that will instantly eclipse any snarky comments about her famous siblings, and Durkin knows precisely how much information to reveal and how much to leave frighteningly implicit.
