In the early part of this century, Maddelena a teenage Italian girl, is attacked whilst walking in the woods. The attack leaves her mentally scarred and our story flashes forward to the 1940s where Maddelena is still troubled. She disappears one day and her daughter vows to find her.

Strong split-personality story, almost a melodrama, with a sturdy performance from Stewart Granger as a thief and romantic lover all in one.

A great movie, about a woman living 2 lives but not knowing it. Unbearably sad, but an interesting concept played out by some classic actors of the era (though some, Stewart Granger excepted, come over a bit OTT nowadays).

Artistic settings beautifully photographed are a pleasing feature of this lavish production, but they cannot disguise the crude melodramatics of the story nor the fact that the film drags, despite its bursts of robust action.
