Madame Curie (1943)

Poor physics student Marie is studying at the Sorbonne in 1890s Paris. One of the few women studying in her field, Marie encounters skepticism concerning her abilities, but is eventually offered a research placement in Pierre Curie's lab. The scientists soon fall in love and embark on a shared quest to extract, from a particular type of rock, a new chemical element they have named radium. However, their research puts them on the brink of professional failure.

...undone by its emphasis on scientific matters and unmistakable Oscar-bait sort of vibe.

A pretty decent film for the time but there's a lot of things holding it back. The narrator is kind of annoying, the dialogue is very wooden (Pidgeon's lines especially), and it would have done the movie a great service to show how Curie slowly died of radiation sickness. That could easily have been a half hour. Still, Greer Garson's acting is very good. Not sure how historically or scientifically accurate it is, but it's worth at least one watch.

Like other films from this era, the emotion of the story is somewhat aggrandized, but it's anchored by Garson's determination and wit and by Pidgeon's humble charm.

Garson and Pidgeon work their usual dramatic magic here, but my favorite scene is the first time she comes to the laboratory.
