Madame Curie (1943)

Poor physics student Marie is studying at the Sorbonne in 1890s Paris. One of the few women studying in her field, Marie encounters skepticism concerning her abilities, but is eventually offered a research placement in Pierre Curie's lab. The scientists soon fall in love and embark on a shared quest to extract, from a particular type of rock, a new chemical element they have named radium. However, their research puts them on the brink of professional failure.

Surprisingly watchable, given its iffy subject matter.

With an eye on the Oscars, this typical MGM biopic of the 1940s, a chronicle of the famous French scientists, is middlebrow and inspirational, teaming for the third time Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon.

Decent film, focusing more on sweet romance than scientific discovery. Artificial and slightly cheesey, but no more than you'd expect from a 40's Hollywood biopic.

A pretty decent film for the time but there's a lot of things holding it back. The narrator is kind of annoying, the dialogue is very wooden (Pidgeon's lines especially), and it would have done the movie a great service to show how Curie slowly died of radiation sickness. That could easily have been a half hour. Still, Greer Garson's acting is very good. Not sure how historically or scientifically accurate it is, but it's worth at least one watch.
