I Am Not Madame Bovary is built on a strong performance by Fan Bingbing and a caustic eye toward bureaucracy. But the good work is undone by a lack of focus and a counter-productive technical gimmick.

The hyper-dramatic touches help disguise that this is essentially a film about paperwork. The rest of the weight is carried by Fan, who’s funny and heartbreaking. She’s a hero for our times: a stubborn woman, willing to inconvenience the powerful to get a fair hearing.

As the second half of the film essentially repeats the action, only years later, the film's pace becomes sluggish, and its impact rapidly deflates. The artful charm of Feng's stylistic choices also begin to feel limiting.

Puzzlingly, the movie rarely inhabits the entirety of the screen. Instead, a small, centered square or circle serves as a window to the film, with the rest of the screen in black -- a stylistic choice that makes for a difficult viewing experience.
