Lucky Miles (2007)

It's 1990 and an Indonesian fishing boat abandons Iraqi and Cambodian refugees in a remote part of the Western Australia. Although most are quickly caught by officials, three men with nothing in common but their misfortune and determination to escape arrest, begin an epic journey into the heart of Australia.

A great film for Australians to watch -especially Aussies who have at least the vaguest interest in immigration to Australia.

A really fantastic experience. If you go into this movie cold, you would assume that it is a deep commentary on the politics of immigration in Australia, but it is actually intended as a comedy. There is plenty of social commentary on the plight of refugees, but this part of the story is portrayed in undertones that the audience can choose to engage in or not at their leisure. People who do not know that this film is supposed to be a comedy will spend the first 20 minutes of the film stifling their laughter until they can hold it in no longer. The story centres around three people of different racial background, two refugees and one of the fisherman that brought them to Australia. Hilarity ensues as they battle their way through the harsh Australian environment, tracked by three Australian Army Reservists. This second trio provide even more laughs, in one of the best films to be shot in Australia in recent memory.

Worst. Subtitles. EVER! Okay, so being in the middle of a park and watching this from far away without my freakin' glasses didn't exactly help! So I'm kind of giving this movie the benefit of the doubt when it comes to those subtitled scenes (but the subtitles REALLY did piss me off). But for a movie to be this engaging and funny despite being surrounded by people talking all the way through it, that's quite impressive.

The restrained but consistently funny script allows a connection with the characters that may have been difficult to achieve with a more serious treatment of the subject.

Pretty funny film with a serious side too, about a group of immigrants who are brought to Australia with the belief that they are being given an easy road to Perth, but find that it is anything but. They end up having to trek through the desert in a bid to survive and find the life they were expecting to get.
