You might not wind up loving Pablo, exactly, but his story's a killer. Even without Pacino.

It is not doubtful that audiences will be drawn in to see Bardem and Cruz at work, but it's a shame that the film doesn't even attempt to exploit their talents. [Full Review in Spanish]

Despite its top notch cast, I thought this film just became a slog, with its brutal violence and unlikable characters. It's also overly long, at a little over 2 hours. When Spanish is spoken, which is fairly often, the subtitles are small.

Double-stuffed with kill squads, killer ’80s couture and mood-killing howlers, Fernando Leon de Aranoa’s Loving Pablo is more a greatest hits than a story, the kind of radically compressed life-of-a-legend movie where everything happens in a giddy, ridiculous gush — except for when it slows down to dwell on horrors.
