In Colombia just after the Great War, an old man falls from a ladder; dying, he professes great love for his wife. After the funeral, a man calls on the widow - she dismisses him angrily. Having read the book a few years ago I don't remember all the details but the film seemed to resume the story pretty well, in a way I was surprised since i expected an adaptation of such a wonderful book to be pretty weak, but the film did set me back to the book, specially because of Javier Barden, who is not only awkwardly attractive as I always imagined Florentino Ariza, but what a fantastic actor. The rest of the cast were only ok, if only they could have cast as well as they casted Javier - sometimes it felt like it was a play and not a film production because the performances just didn't seem real. I also think it would be much better if the film was in spanish and not english, but oh well, it really surpassed my expectations.

This was a captivating love story with depth of emotion, a romantic, yet unusually frank look at how someone might deal with the pain of not being with their true love. Its strong points were enough to make me overlook its weaknesses.
