The Cuckoo (2002)

September of 1944, a few days before Finland went out of the Second World War. A chained to a rock Finnish sniper-kamikadze Veikko managed to set himself free. Ivan, a captain of the Soviet Army, arrested by the Front Secret Police 'Smersh', has a narrow escape. They are soldiers of the two enemy armies. A Lapp woman Anni gives a shelter to both of them at her farm. For Anni they are not enemies, but just men.

A heart-warming premise and I loved the use of Russian, Finnish and SÃ¡mi (and some German). The characters were very likeable. But somehow the film doesn't evolve beyond the obvious clichÃ©s.

This movie is visually aesthetically please on many levels, especially the Finnish Landscape filming which was superb. The story concept of 3 survivors all speaking different languages trying to communicate is convincingly done and you grow to struggle with these post war survivors and become attached to all of them...how each fond what they wanted: company amid their lonely struggles to survive. Beautiful acting, beautiful use of silence in the movie and stunning, breath taking views.

...the Bergman-like surrealistic climax goes on far too long and actually jolts your attention away from the quite charming and moving story that preceded it.

What a facinating movie! It is made from such a different perspective from the usual war flicks of Hollywood. The characters are indeed quirky!
