For a film that purports to be transgressive, progressive, and feminist, it achieves some of those goals, but doesn't quite make it to the finish line. The women are sympathetic, relatable, and their secret rebellions are realistic. But as the stories progress, they sink into the mire of melodrama and/or sitcom situations, and the ending doesn't seem to make any of the previous struggles worthwhile. Not a single one of them stands up for themselves; at the end of the day, they are resigned to let men trample all over their dreams and dignity, which in my opinion, is a huge misstep.

It may not offer all the answers or some ultimate victory for its entrapped women, but it's enough to help celebrate scattered moments of joy and rebellion amidst dreams of something better.

This story of four ordinary women who seek small joys was buoyed by wonderful performances - especially by Ratna Pathak Shah.

Filmmaker Alankrita Shrivastava presents a vivid setting, a post-“gas tragedy” Bhopal full of working class/middle class life and clashing gender mores.

Katie Walsh 06 Sep 2017

The rousing Indian drama Lipstick Under My Burkha, co-written and directed by Alankrita Shrivastava, takes on the repressive traditions around gender and sexuality in that country with refreshing candor and humor.
