Lenny Bruce was not only a funky comedian but one of the greatest heros of free speech of the last hundred years. Unfortunately a lot of his recorded material is rather sketchy and sometimes hard to grasp out of context. "Lenny" then, is an absolute gem, insofar as it cuts through the crap and delivers the man himself- Dustin Hoffman gets him down to a tee [nominated for an oscar, for what it's worth] and Bruce's whole sorry story is made beautiful by a great supporting cast and an inspired script, not to mention the fantastic black and white photography. Absolute quality film-making...

Great film about a great man. Hoffman nails Bruce completely. Not only in the stand up routines, but int he quieter moments with Honey and his child. Fosse does a good job of apeing Lenny's act, with fast edits, but this is Hoffman's film. One of his best performances

Dustin Hoffman gives one of the greatest performances as Lenny Bruce. All of Bruce's comedic tics and foul mouthed routines are there and Hoffman brings him to life with a sort of zest that actors seemed to showcase in the 70's. The comedy and tragedy is all there. Valerie Perrine is great in this too but it clearly is Dustin Hoffman's show.
