L'Eclisse (1962)

Vittoria is a beautiful literary translator living in Rome. After splitting from her writer boyfriend, Riccardo, Vittoria meets Piero, a lively stockbroker, on the hectic floor of the Roman stock exchange. Though Vittoria and Piero begin a relationship, it is not one without difficulties, and their commitment to one another is tested during an eclipse.

A stunning film. Those over-used to modern film editing techniques may well be bored to tears. However, For those with a tolerance for slowness the film is magnificent and the last 10 minutes are perehaps 10 of the best ever put on screen. After viewing it i admit i went 'Wha...?!' but on reflection it made perfect sense - telling us what happened by NOT showing us what happened. Genius. I have no doubt i will watch this many times over.

The alienation of the main characters is so subtle and yet utterly pervasive in our modern lives. Antonioni manages to expose the desperation of ordinary life with his unique artistry.

Is the best ending of a film. We are waiting on the last frame her presence. Even though she already dissapeared and the things we expect in life may never come we just appreciate life for what we already have, even if it means letting go better things that may happen to us.
