The Living and the Dead (2006)

Lord Donald and Lady Nancy reside in the magnificent but run-down Longleigh House with James, their mentally disabled adult son. Nancy has fallen seriously ill and Donald is preparing to sell the house to raise enough money to pay for an operation. He arranges for the family nurse, Mary, to take care of Nancy while he leaves to tend to the sale. However, James wants to prove to his father that he can look after his mother on his own and decides to lock Mary out of the house. It isn't long before James starts mixing his mother's pills and forgetting to take his own medication, and as the stress of looking after his mother increases, so too does the severity of his own condition.

You'll have some laughs, you'll be very disturbed, your nerves will be tested, you'll shed some tears,... if you would just dare and see this one! Horror? My ass!! This is (weird) drama to the fullest. Beautifull and wacked... just the way I like it.

Awesome premise. The first 45 minutes were Kubrick on acid. I thought the last half was wasted and a bit of a cop out. It should have played more realistic and focused on James and the mother. The nightmare sequence made me laugh and the constant flashbacks were jarring. I'm only being picky because the premise was so original and disturbing it didn't need the techno-strobe-light-bullshit.

An odd British film, that I had heard nothing but very high praise for. It just ended, and I cannot understand what anyone saw in this movie. All the characters, even the father and mother (the two we are suppose to sympathize with) are hardened and mean to no need. The movie is trippy, but doesn't get that way until about 40 minutes in, at which point I was thinking it was finally going to get really good, now that the setup is done. I was wrong. It uses it's trippiness as a crutch as oppose to doing with it anything original and the last 20 minutes or so (for me at least) were so predictable and just boring. Having said all that, all the actors did great.

The first half was too painful to watch, and then I just dunno whats going on. Whats the ending abt? Can anyone tell me? Who's the crazy one? the Dad or the son? But no matter, I still appreciate Leo Bill act!
