It didn't offer much of an explanation or back story for any of the protagonists, but the downplayed action was pretty good. A rather unusual take on a werewolf flick.

I really wanted this to be good. I love werewolf movies with practical effects. Unfortunately this movie is bad. The werewolves are cool up until you see their faces. They look like Goblins out of a Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings movie rather than Wolves. If you want a good werewolf movie stick with the classics: American WW in London, the Howling and Dog Soldiers(not a classic but good)

A little bit different approach to werewolf tales, focusing on an elderly, grumpy, occasionally racist man in a retirement community who begins to suspect that the neighbors and their pets are being eaten by something more than just wild animals coming in from the woods at night. As he prepares for the next full moon, his strained relationship with his son grows worse, paralleling the coming threat. Because the protagonist is so abrasive, it is sometimes difficult to cheer for him. The tone is serious, even when the situations wants to veer into comedy, resulting in a little unevenness. Some of the motivations of the other characters, especially the priest, were a little unclear to me. The transformations scenes were handled pretty well, but I have to admit that I'm not especially convinced by werewolf effects these days. Still, I liked how the camera moved back and forth in a particular transformation scene.

This bland take on werewolves has an excellent premise and a slow burn to its pacing that had a lot of promise, but unfortunately, it wrote a few checks the script couldn't cash.
