The most enjoyable werewolf movie I have seen in years... that's not saying too much admittedly... but the werewolf here does look a little like a giant Nic Cage hair piece so that's gotta count for something, right?

There was a lot about this film I really liked. The old school feel being one of them. The interactions between the priest and Ambrosia give just a bit of depth to the film's theme of a society that has little time to care for its elders. A film with a blind retiree as protagonist, how great an idea is that. Damici more than holds the screen, a man too gruffly determined to be upstaged by a monster. The humour his character brings to the film is very well delivered and again gave it the old school feel for me. The monsters were a little campy as was the transformation but it worked.

Budgetary constraints notwithstanding, this rather impressive Horror film mixes Gran Torino with Bubba-Ho-Tep giving us a film about an old warrior going down swinging. The film has slight missteps but is anchored by a superb performance from Damici and a rather compelling tale of a blind veteran in one last fight. A blast of a genre offering.

Those looking for a full on horror film are going to be disappointed in Late Phases. What they will find instead is a film about a man coming to terms with his life and choices before he dies that features werewolves. The werewolf portion is fairly cut and dry failing to really bring anything new to the table, but does feature a nice twist on the now standard John Landis version of the transformation. It's also worth noting that this film was most likely shot on a tiny budget, so don't expect too much from the final werewolf effects. Past the token horror portion of the film, the main arc of the story is emotionally satisfying and makes it well worth a recommendation. 4 stars

I'd pay good money to see the showdown between this guy and Stephen Lang's character from Don't Breathe.
