Distillation of Van Sants style of art. Sound work is magnificent throughout, evoking the gradual fading out of the world. 7 minute static reverse tracking shot is hypnotic.

Perhaps my praise of this film stems from my near-obsession with the mythology and richly experiential psychological mystique surrounding Kurt Cobain. Perhaps that very particular sort of priming hyper-attuned me to immersing myself in this highly subjective film experience. But I do know that, for me, it was one of the more quietly powerful experiences I have had in a long time. I want to gush about it, much as I always have about Cobain himself, but I am simply too haunted by the film to distract from that, its powerful mood and (lack of) singular message. Furthermore, to limit this to the scope of Cobain's strange and hardly describable legacy would be doing Van Zant's transcendent and powerful art a disservice. If the film expressly connects to anything about Cobain at all, it only does so in as much as it illustrates why it truly is better to burn out than fade away. The eerie headspace found here is something I am sure I will revisit time and time again. Again, forgive my bias, but I love this film.

Some people say it is not true to Kurt Cobain's last days but it is not meant to be a documentary on his death! This is a film telling the story of a ressemblant story but not exactly the same! The names of the characters are even different. This film is very good, I like the music tunes in them and I advise anyone to watch it especially if you like Nirvana. Don't expect a reconstitution to the last detail of Kurt's death of course but still, bloody good film. Yeah, and then you can also listen to Pagoda. Good music. They're the band that represents Nirvana in the film and the actors actually made an album together. *****

Devastating, haunting, beautiful, poetic, unforgettable... the more I watch this film, the more I adore it. It still gets under my skin and lingers with me for days after I watch it, and I have seen it over ten times. This quiet, unsettling character study demands a lot of the audience and, in some ways, is about as subtle as films get. Having said that, I think it is obvious that none of the directorial decisions are made without clear intent. Van Sant's abstract, minimalist approach to the story is disarming at first but ultimately effective. It provides us with a depiction of silent degradation as opposed to a forcefully emotional presentation. The stylistic nature works beautifully as an illustration of loneliness, but it is Michael Pitt's chillingly convincing work on the focal character that brings it all together so well. This is one of his finest performances; nuanced, complex and textured. It is rare that a story can say so much without directly spelling anything out. I think this is one of the saddest, most expertly engineered studies of depression I have seen.
