Kundun (1997)

The Tibetans refer to the Dalai Lama as 'Kundun', which means 'The Presence'. He was forced to escape from his native home, Tibet, when communist China invaded and enforced an oppressive regime upon the peaceful nation. The Dalai Lama escaped to India in 1959 and has been living in exile in Dharamsala ever since.

Absolutely incredible. I saw this film right after an all-night session of star wars, which was supposed to display alien cultures but in which all cultures look in one or the other way American. What really hit me about Kundun was this incredible detailled and genuine otherness.

This was very artfully done while remaining historically accurate. Martin Scorsese, with the consultation of H.H. the Dalai Lama, produces a remarkable film able to stir the emotions, and dazzle the eyes. It is a great look into Tibetan culture, and what it was like for a small boy to become the leader of a country, a people, and a religion.

Scorsese's most hypnotic narrative may be his best.

A somewhat under appreciated and very different film from Scorsese.

powerful movie---visually inspiring, and the score is great, if you don't mind minimalism. (I obviously don't)
