The Sand Pebbles (1966)

Engineer Jake Holman arrives aboard the gunboat USS San Pablo, assigned to patrol a tributary of the Yangtze in the middle of exploited and revolution-torn 1926 China. His iconoclasm and cynical nature soon clash with the 'rice-bowl' system which runs the ship and the uneasy symbiosis between Chinese and foreigner on the river. Hostility towards the gunboat's presence reaches a climax when the boat must crash through a river-boom and rescue missionaries upriver at China Light Mission.

Steve McQueen is at his best in one of director Robert Wise's many great films. Set in China in the 1920s, the movie is really an alternate take on U.S. involvement in Vietnam and made at a time when Hollywood was not making movies about the Vietnam War. A terrific story with great performances and one of composer Jerry Goldsmith's best scores...

The movie is graced by a strong performance by McQueen, who is completely unrecognizable from Bullitt. Solid support and realistic story and visuals make a great movie about American heroism.

Another film from the nostalgia vaults. The Sand Pebbles is a long film, but the story is compelling and well done, and has some very fine acting turns for tough guy Steve McQueen, Richard Crenna, and Richard Attenborough. It's realistic in its depiction of the strange gunboat conflicts that have erupted in China from time to time. The scenery is also a great backdrop to an era that most people know little about. It had some very brutal scenes for a film of this era, and the dramatic tension ebbs and flows with precision despite the long running time. The era comes to life so well, you really feel as if you're stuck on the river with the crew. Recommended.
