What a great movie. It is sad and you feel for the central character. For whatever reason, or reasons, she becomes increasingly lonely and despondent. She abandons the life as she knows it and sets off for a fantasy treasure. The peripheral characters are all kind and induced to lend her a helping hand. Scenes are offset by dramatic ambient music that I think accentuate her dissociative state. I think we all know this person. And we want her to know we care. Well done to the writers and actors for treating this true story with such poise and sensitivity.

An outstanding and compellingly-offbeat feature that charts the strange journey of an obsessive Japanese woman in pursuit of a suitcase full of cash. The kooky nature of the protagonist and its nihilistic depiction of a chauvinistic Japanese society might prove too hard to swallow for some, but if you look beyond, you'll find snatches of dark humour. Part of the charm of Kumiko is how seriously it treats its protagonist's (absurd) obsession and what could have been a lame movie turns out to be worth the time because Kumiko's utter conviction and courage makes us root for her.

Little is explained, and even less is revealed about what makes Kumiko tick. But for the patient and inquisitive, the ride can be maddeningly absorbing, unearthing its own kind of treasure.
