Air Doll (2009)

A life-size, inflatable sex doll suddenly comes to life one day. Without her owner knowing, she goes for a walk around town and falls in love with Junichi. Even Hirokazu Kore-eda himself can fail, but that's an important lesson due to the erroneous expectations I created for myself. Even so, Air Doll seemed like a very superficial exploration of loneliness in big cities. Yet, it's worth highlighting the acting work of Doona Bae who leads and supports the film completely even with its weaknesses and shortcomings. It felt like a preamble to what Spike Jonze's Her would manage to expose wonderfully four years later.

For 75 minutes or so, Air Doll is the lightest of Kore-eda’s movies, which include the superb “Nobody Knows’’ (2004) and “Still Life’’ (2008). Gradually, though, the tender music-box score — by one-man Japanese band world’s end girlfriend — is tinged with foreboding.
