Kon-Tiki (1950)

"Kon-Tiki" was the name of a wooden raft used by six Scandinavian scientists, led by Thor Heyerdahl, to make a 101-day journey from South America to the Polynesian Islands. The purpose of the expedition was to prove Heyerdal's theory that the Polynesian Islands were populated from the east- specifically Peru- rather than from the west (Asia) as had been the theory for hundreds of years. Heyerdahl made a study of the winds and tides in the Pacific, and by simulating conditions as closely as possible to those he theorized the Peruvians encountered, set out on the voyage.

Improbable theory meets bored, possibly insane males. It would probably be terrible if it were longer, but it's 1 hour run-time makes it interesting.

An incredible adventure that's "perfectly" captured. First of all this film and the story behind it is very admiring. It's filming is done by amaturs and it gives it that nice touch of realness to the adventure about Thor's hypothesis put to the test. It's also the first Norwegian Oscar-winner. Cool.

Pretty cool considering when it was produced but a bit like an educational film about a sea voyage. I didn't really get the feel of what it would be like to be on that boat - "Blue Water, White Death" does that so much better.
