A well-executed, inspiring, feel good classroom film. I just love movies like this. A little more than made-for-tvish, but it did my heart good...

The lackluster effect of this film is a result of uninspired directing. The kids give decent performances but the script and the directing never let it soar. It'll make you feel hopeful but it is far to saccharin. Very little effort was made to reflect the true grittiness of the lives of the children, everything is telegraphed and fits into a sweet little preconceived package. I rolled my eyes far too often at the convenient and sudden change of heart the bad guys show...so TV!

This film takes one of them games I thought was pretty boring to a group of kids who use it to kick some serious ass. I loved this film and is one I recommend when ever you need to feel good.

Not sure what the target audience is for this movie. Overall, it seems to be targeted at kids, but some of the foul language used is inappropriate (for non-inner city kids). Some of the things in there are a bit far fetched (actually most things are - like a kindergardener being the only one to win a tournament? or learning how to play chess in your mind in 10 seconds? or all kids in your class wants to play chess? and so on). Also, acting is a bit flat by almost everyone. But, if you want to inspire your kids to play chess, this would be a good movie to consider. Or if you want to be inspired by a teacher trying to make a difference with inner city kids, this would be worth watching.
