Killer's Kiss (1955)

Davey Gordon, a New York City boxer at the end of his career, falls for dancer Gloria Price. However, their budding relationship is interrupted by Gloria's violent boss, Vincent Rapallo, who has eyes for Gloria. The two decide to skip town, but before they can, Vincent and his thugs abduct Gloria, and Davey is forced to search for her among the most squalid corners of the city, with his enemy hiding in the shadows.

Kubricks' first film, the symbolism and inventive use of light and shadow show that Kubrick is a god among men. Even at his earliest he proved that he was better then every director before or sense.

This is a solid noir film with a brilliantly staged finale that is not only unique for its time but is tense throughout. It is nowhere near Kubrick's later masterpieces like A Clockwork Orange and 2001, but it is pretty solid for someone only making their second feature.

Kubrick's "first" movie is a boxing noir that contains some excellent cinematography and one tense ending brawl.

There's hardly any story or substance to speak of in this semi-noir, just about enough to sustain a short. But it's too beautifully shot and directed to be ignored. Highly energetic and playful, and a fun watch - maybe the best "stretched short subject" I've seen.

Very underrated. The story and acting are between decent and good, but the photography/directing is fantastic. Kubrick has improved immensely as a filmmaker between the preceding effort (Fear and Desire) and Killer's Kiss. It is true that much of Fear and Desire's trouble lies in its weak story/screenplay (which was not Kubrick's work), but even the composition of shots in that film was nowhere near as eye-pleasing or as interesting as that of the shots in his better-known works. It just doesn't look like Kubrick. His next film, Killer's Kiss, represents a huge step in the direction of these better known films. In fact, I think Killer's Kiss looks better than his next film. So I guess I'm saying, Killer's Kiss deserves to be watched. It's not just for Kubrick worshipers; it's for people who like good movies.
