Khartoum (1966)

English General Charles George Gordon is appointed military governor of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan by the Prime Minister. Ordered to evacuate Egyptians from the Sudan, Gordon stays on to protect the people of Khartoum, who are under threat of being conquered by a Muslim army.

I saw this at the 70 mm festival in Oslo so I might be a bit taken by the amazing picture quality, but this was rather enjoyable. I am not sure what semblance it has to what really happened, but taken as a movie on it own merits given the time it was made in, it was excellent.

A good historical movie. Olivier plays the Mahdi, a self-proclaimed Islamic messiah on a crusade to bring all the Islamic world under his rule. Heston portrays General Gordon, the British 'go to guy' in all issues Sudanese. While there are some minor diversions from the actual history of the events portrayed, most of it is bang on. A classic, with a classic performance by one of the greatest actors of his generation. No, not Heston.
