The biggest takeaway from Kelly & Cal, a wonderfully honest and tender film about the bitter pill of adulthood, is Hollywood's criminal underuse of Juliette Lewis.

Interesting, well-acted development of a unusual relationship between a new mother, bewildered by the difference between her former and present life, spurred by hormonal changes and seeming rejection by her husband, and a newly crippled teen trying to emotionally adjust to the changes in his life. How these two relate to each other makes a fascinating story.

Kelly & Cal is at its best when focused on Lewis and Weston.

Penny Walker 24 Sep 2014

There are complex situations, well-acted characters and a central relationship that feels authentic and mature — and yet it's missing some element to bring it fully into focus.

A sympathetic look at an unlikely relationship between a new mother and a recent paraplegic neighbor. I especially enjoyed Juliette Lewis' riot grrrl rocker throwback (complete with zine, cassette demo, and Manic Panic), which featured her actual music.
