Just Before Dawn (1981)

In the Oregon mountains, a pair of hunters encounter a machete-wielding killer in an abandoned church. Meanwhile, five campers arrive to examine some property one of them has inherited but are warned by the forest ranger not to venture forth. Soon after they set up camp, they begin hearing strange noises, encounter a mysterious singing girl and start disappearing one by one.

Slow moving but solid creepy backwoods slasher from the early 80s. The films killers are overweight, inbred, creepy, twin brother mountain men who terrorize a group of yuppie campers up in the mountains. The kinda slasher movie where you don't really care about the campers who are on their self indulgent vacations, who only serve as annoying set pieces that make you route for their deaths. The film is very slow moving at parts but if you stick around till the very end...your pay off will be worth the wait.

While it starts off well enough, the movie loses pretty much all of its momentum somewhere around 2/3rds of the way through. While never really creepy, there are parts that kinda work in the familiar way that slasher movies can. But aside from the scene with the heroine stuck in a tree that the killer chops down, the last 3rd is really devoid of much excitement. The way the final killer is offed is interesting, he's choked to death by the main girl shoving her arm down his throat, wacky. Could have been decent, but the pacing is pretty bad.

Everything about this movie is crap,its really dated and not scary but all this mixed together makes it watchable,its actually okay in a crap way.
