A faithful Casey adaptation, but one that's stagebound and lackluster.

Sorry Hitchcock, but not one of your best. Hitchcock's second sound film seems to be all about dialogue and it isn't performed well by any of the actors. I didn't feel any sympathy for the poor starving Irish family, or joy when they receive money and the possibility of gaining a better life. The only pleasing element of the movie was the ending. The characters start at a low point in their lifes and at the conculsion they are even lower. Which is good because it reflects the times and lifestyle. Not all families in low class can make it out of their class structure. You are born into a class and stay there. Life isn't a fairytale.

This film adaption of Sean O'Casey's classic play directed by Alfred Hitchock is merely an adaption. However, that is not Hitchcock's fault because if Hitchcock would have tried to add more to the play the story would not have worked because it is a story that is meant to be simple. Therefore, in the end this filmed adaption turns out to be merely a filming of the staged play and the film only serves to prove that Juno in the Paycock is a play and not a movie. Despite the fact that because of this many times the film aspect takes away from the performances the story is still intact and it is a very good one. In that case, if you fail to ever get a chance to see Juno and the Paycock onstage you can always fall back on this film version.

Chalk this one up as a mistake. Everybody makes them, including the masters. Avoid unless you're a fan of the play or a Hitchcock completist.
