The love I have for this movie mostly stems from Cage's screen presence. Unlike most people who can't think for themselves and follow what the popular opinion is, I actually really like Nicolas Cage, and I always have. To me he is a good actor just like any other A-List superstar, I've never looked at him any differently. With that out of the way I'd like to say that this is a great film. Just like Mud it rides on the fact that its generally disliked star puts on a great performance. And in the same vein as Mud, Hick and Out of the Furnace it also happens to be a country themed coming of age movie. I'M A SUCKER FOR THESE FILMS. The plot is good and the characters are great, makes for a grittier adaptation of Gran Torino.

The realism is spectacular! Should have went to the big screen. Hey Hollywood. You dropped the ball on this this one. You could have squeezed a couple of Oscars or of this master piece.

An intense southern Gothic. Nicholas Cage is actually good in this film, probably because he plays a stoic character.

A ruthless Southern tale told with exquisite direction by Green, coupled with perhaps Cage's best performance, "Joe" is never afraid to be explicit and smartly uses its brutality to cleanse the filth of its character development and tell an emotional story from beginning to end.
