Idealistic teacher tries to deal with a multitude of issues, both political and personal, in Tavernier's 1999 drama. The best aspect of the movie is that, even though several of the plot points are extreme, none of them are either poorly handled or unbelievable.

A model of politically engaged cinema, offering a clear-eyed view of a social problem without pretending to have any easy solutions.

Everyone has problems, some just more severe than the others. The film pictures well what it must be like being a parent. The incredible responsibility of an innocent little being's life. And also how so many parents fail. Not much of a feel good movie, then.

Almost a documentary. Very needful, very today. Recommended.

Will prove too depressing and long-winded for a significant number of U.S. audiences to embrace.
