Straight up, this was both disturbing and predictable. The trailer essentially gave away the whole plot and the story kept getting creepier by the minute. Without a doubt, Gyllenhaal's acting is exceptional, but it is eclipsed by the unfortunate downfall of her character. I am able to take away Colangelo's point of how modern society bleeds away our creative beings and there are so few longing to nurture it. But this point can be made without passively portraying a very scary kidnapping. At the very least it's desperate and irresponsible

Colangelo (whose underrated 2014 first feature “Little Accidents” was about the aftermath of a fatal mining accident) has created a consistently interesting if slow-moving drama that works very well as a showcase for its lead performer.

I don't usually give movies 5 star ratings--it's extremely rare and most times, films get a 4.5/5, But this movie was perfect -- or at least, extremely close. The acting, directing, writing, pacing--everything was so flawlessly executed. Even the final scene had a lot of weight.

Maggie Gyllenhaal is the only developed character of the movie, its 99% her. One note story, falls short everywhere.

Perhaps we are never driven to indignation at Lisa’s actions because the film exudes a refreshing state of calm, boasting a visual style that is awash with turquoise hues.
