Iron Eagle (1986)

When Doug's father, an Air Force Pilot, is shot down by MiGs belonging to a radical Middle Eastern state, no one seems able to get him out. Doug finds Chappy, an Air Force Colonel who is intrigued by the idea of sending in two fighters piloted by himself and Doug to rescue Doug's father after bombing the MiG base.

Louis Gossett Jr. in one of his best movies.

OKay, I love this movie but I couldn;t give it more than 3 stars because I realize it's by no means a masterpiece. The soundtrack is pretty phenominal though. I think it's gets an extra star just for that.

Even though this was released after Top Gun, it actually was in production before and had a delayed release. Beautifully illustrates an era when people were still able to suspend belief in reality (and model planes being destroyed by 20-mm canon round bursts) and just enjoy US air superiority.

This is one of the all time greatest movies and the soundtrack is absolutely incredible! Don't even talk to me about the "sequals", though...

I love the challenge a young man faces against all odds to rescue his father. I get a laugh at the newsman at the very end snd the statement about the young mans appointment to the Air Force Academy and flying of the f-16s.
