Capricorn One (1977)

In order to protect the reputation of the American space program, a team of NASA administrators turn the first Mars mission into a phony Mars landing. Under threat of harm to their families the astronauts play their part in the deception on a staged set in a deserted military base. But once the real ship returns to Earth and burns up on re-entry, the astronauts become liabilities. Now, with the help of a crusading reporter, they must battle a sinister conspiracy that will stop at nothing to keep the truth hidden.

Really makes you think ........especially given events since the turn of the century. 1st saw this as a kid didn't understand any of it but my dad couldn't stop raving about it at the time. Fast forward a good 30 or so yrs right after the 2nd shuttle (allegedly) went down......no one ever saw it, just sparks, scattered debris and what the news told us. The same news agencies & gov't that convinced us of WMD's. So, with the staggering figures allocated for such ventures aside, why would anyone be less than forthcoming regarding the space program ?? What if these ventures were really turbo charged Hollywood productions (per Wag The Dog) ?? In such case, where do all the funds actually go ? Moreover, what of the Strategic Air Command's "Vision for 2020" ??? Hmmmm....... All this from a lil science fiction movie from the 70s !!!

The film that gets you questioning did man really go to the moon. Wonderful concept and at times very funny.

Remains a decent movie and window into the '70s. Looks good in HD in terms of picture detail.

Some of the elements I loved. There's a real tension in the first half, when the trio find out that the Mission to Mars that they've trained for is aborted and will be instead done at some top secret studio. But then in the second half, it becomes action adventurey as the astronauts try to avoid the authorities while escaping into the desert. Plus: Elliott Gould.
