Capricorn One (1977)

In order to protect the reputation of the American space program, a team of NASA administrators turn the first Mars mission into a phony Mars landing. Under threat of harm to their families the astronauts play their part in the deception on a staged set in a deserted military base. But once the real ship returns to Earth and burns up on re-entry, the astronauts become liabilities. Now, with the help of a crusading reporter, they must battle a sinister conspiracy that will stop at nothing to keep the truth hidden.

A fantastic story that is sometimes overlooked due to it's frequent showings on tv. It's really a conspiracy film, that apes the opinions of those who still don't believe that moon reached the moon. I believe they did, but this film is a good way to show how it could have been faked. The acting is amazing, and the whole film is truly glorious in every single way. An absolute five-star rated film that everyone would enjoy.

Produced in 1978 it contains surprisingly interesting effects. The story line is exactly what one would write for a film like this and the production pulls it off very well. Unlike that "TOP CRITIC"reviewer that makes the statement "Can you believe OJ Simpson as an astronaut?" The answer is YES. He does a fine job and I am not stuck on judging films by political correctness or the presence of an actor that later had legal and moral issues. That reviewer should never had made such a comment and only again shows why his reviews are more and more being ignored.

It's kind of amazing how many long speeches there are in what is putatively an action movie, but hey, as long as you've got Hal Holbrook why not use him, I guess. Besides, what other movie gives you two heroes who were BOTH married to Barbra Streisand, as well as Sam Waterston as comic relief, O.J. Simpson in a sympathetic role, and Telly Savalas kicking ass and taking names? It's enough to make up for the total implausibility of the plot.

They have a good idea but hokey execution. When the astronauts are supposed to be on Mars there is a 21-second delay which is too long to carry on a conversation with someone on Earth, but right after they leave, the astronauts are speaking through radio link with their wives. That doesn't make sense.

Very good conspiracy sci-fi thriller starring one of my fave actors, Elliott Gould.
