"Where do these people get their money,” I wrote in my notes as Leif and his dog set out for a long drive at the film’s fade-out. Doesn’t matter. Nor do the multiple clichés. In Ride the Eagle, the laid-back vibe is all.

The thing about Ride the Eagle is we have a funny, sweet, insightful, low-key charmer of a story that’s all about making human connections, reconciling broken relationships and finding solace in the companionship of another fellow traveler on this planet — and yet the main characters are almost never in the same room with one another.

The message and overall notions of this story are the best thing about Ride the Eagle. A film that doesn't benefit from having as a lead a Jake Johnson stuck in a mold as an actor. The clearest flaw in this narrative in my opinion, lies in the fact that, as I said, while the message is good, there's nothing particularly interesting in the unfolding of the events that occur on screen. It's fine that the character gets his journey to heal his problems, but I couldn't connect with anything that is presented there, and that of course will undermine any story that needs that precise element from the viewers to keep their attention alive. Perhaps the point of such indie films is not to be quickly forgotten or dismissed, but when there's so little to mention in terms of significance, their purpose and function end the very moment the credits begin to roll.
