A very interesting documentary about the story of two young men and their senseless murder of 3 people to get a red car. Herzog tackles the subject matter brilliantly, never taking sides, never making judgements, often just listening to people tell their story and to give an end to end documentary about the murder, the imprisonment and the execution and aftermath of one of the protagonists. In looking into this subject it makes me 1) glad I dont live in texas and 2) happy that we dont have capital punishment in Canada. Sure, they are guilty as sin and in Darwinian terms its better to top these bastards to remove them from the gene pool (although one of them wants to have 50 kids with his wife) but you cannot countenance the death of one with the death of another. Jesus wouldnt approve - as Werner so rightly says. In short its another great piece of work from the man Herzog.

Simply outstanding! It matters not where you stand on the death penalty...this film will move you. One of the best documentary films I've seen in a decade.

WernerHerzog is back to his best with this. This is about the dark side of the human beings in normal world. Sometimes the simple yet life-changing choices we make can have severe damage on somebody else's life. Herzog is ooking for why people kill, why they do it for something they dont have or the means to have, the effect of their choice on other people, judiciary etc. Like his any other work this is raw, powerful, moving and emotional journey for the people who were affected by the actions of the other people. The questions he is asking/looking is out for everyone out there.

Herzog, as ever, is obsessed most of all with human nature: Into the Abyss explores our deepest urges to love, and live, and kill.

This film doesn't stand much of a chance to reach many viewers given the grim subject matter competing with The Muppets & Santa Claus. Too bad. Even if you've made your mind up about capital punishment and don't care to weather a [surprisingly] fair and balanced case study of a Texas triple homocide and subsequent execution, Into the Abyss is worth your attention. The delicate unveiling of indelicate people, from perpetrators to victims to clergy to prison personnel, is riveting and revealing. I found myself flinching, shaking my head, muttering, and shifting in my seat--a TPR, total physical response, to our painfully fragile human condition, which I now understand just a little better.
