Inside Moves (1980)

After a failed suicide attempt leaves him partially crippled, Rory begins spending a lot of time at a neighborhood bar full of interesting misfits. When Jerry the bartender suddenly finds himself playing basketball for the Golden State Warriors, Rory and the rest of the bar regulars hope his success will provide a lift to their sagging spirits. Will Jerry forget his friends? What about his junkie hooker girlfriend and her pimp?

oh man, this is interesting... its basically John Savage getting shit on from the opening scene... there isn't any basketball really played and getting in the NBA is as simple as walking up the tunnel, past security and talking shit to a big black guy.

A boring, aimless film that builds little tension and doesn't have nearly enough humor to avoid sinking into a soap-opera swamp.

After trying to kill himself, but failing at it and instead ending up a cripple. Rory (John Savage), starts hanging out in Max's bar. A neigbourhood bar with a colorful clientele. He soons befriends the bar tender Jerry Maxwell (David Morse), a crippled basketball player who is one knee operation away from the big league. "Inside Moves" is a soulful movie about human kindness and hope. The cast shines throughout, especially John Savage!

As an attempt to cash in on the inspirational-underdog-sports-movie model popularized a few years earlier by Rocky, Inside Moves is rather transparent: Morse’s Jerry Maxwell is an even longer shot for stardom than the Italian Stallion. But what’s affecting here is the relationship between Jerry and Roary (John Savage), who is the film’s true protagonist.

If I could find a neighborhood bar as warm & fun as the 1 on Inside Moves, I defintely wouldnt mind hanging out
