Newcastle (2008)

17-year old Jesse lives in the shadow of his older brother Victor's failure to become surfing's Next Big Thing. Even when he's in his natural habitat of magnificent surf breaks, his blue-collar future is brought home by the coal barges that constantly line his horizon. Jesse has the natural skills to surf his way out of this reality and onto the international circuit but can he overcome his equally natural ability to sabotage himself? A momentous weekend away with his mates that includes first love and tragedy leads him to discover what's really important, and also to the performance of a lifetime.

A glum and slack family drama, Newcastle is punctuated by bright bursts of dreamy surfing images, but not enough to make the film rewarding.

apart from the fact that it was advertised to be a surfing film the surfing wasnt that hot. I think they went overboard with the theatrics in this film because i was expecting lots of surfing contests etc, however i did cry in the theatre as it was a pretty sad ending when jessys brother gets killed surfing. sad. sad. sad

An engaging yarn buoyed by spectacular surf action. Emotional discord aside, it will strike the right note with any teenage surfie heading to the beach this summer.

A well meaning but ineffective coming-of-age story set on the surfing beaches of the industrial mining center of Newcastle, Australia. Mediocre action footage and tedious angst make for a film that is an effort to watch.
