Night Moves (1975)

Private detective and former football player Harry Moseby gets hired on to what seems a standard missing person case - a former Hollywood actress wants Moseby to find and return her daughter. A great 40's style film-noir that even references the great Sam Spade from 'The Maltese Falcon'

There was no better decade for American cinema than the 1970s.

Don’t expect Hitchcock or De Palma here — Reichardt is much too low-key and modest for such crowd-pleasing pyrotechnics — but one long, sustained shot near the end seems to suggest that people who are convinced they are doing the right thing are capable of great evil.

Gene Hackman and director Arthur Penn re-team post Bonnie and Clyde for this terrific mystery story about a detective (Hackman) who, in the words of director Penn, "Can't detect shit". Those words may be a bit harsh in describing the character of Harry Moseby but they are nonetheless apt. The plot, set into motion when Moseby takes a job from an aging never-was actress, to track down her missing daughter (a 17 year old Melanie Griffith), takes many twists and turns involving murder, the mysterious wreckage of a plane and sunken Mayan artifacts, and by the end of the picture you may be left wondering who did what to who, how and why. But ultimately the exact details of the plot aren't important especially since the story is told from Moseby's point of view. If Moseby doesn't understand what his investigation is all about, why should the audience?

Great neo-noir! I absolutely loved the moody, gritty poetry of the first 7/8ths, a little less keen on it once it became more of a straightforward thriller and raced a little too quick to it's conclusion. But even then, it was still damned entertaining, and a great closing shot.
