Private detective and former football player Harry Moseby gets hired on to what seems a standard missing person case - a former Hollywood actress wants Moseby to find and return her daughter. Harry travels to Florida to find her, but he begins to see a connection between the runaway girl, the world of Hollywood stuntmen, and a suspicious mechanic when an unsolved murder comes to light.

not alot of people know about this movie but its a good one, with a twist ending you dont want to miss

Great film noir. Gene Hackman is great and so is a very young Melanie Griffith and James Woods

A lesser known neo-noir film from 1975, featuring the witty, likable screen presence of Gene Hackman as P.I. Harry Moseby. The pale cousin of Chinatown has a few moves of its own, with interesting twists, if you have the patience for it that is. By the third act I was rapt, admiring the understated performance while my girlfriend climbed the walls.

An honest to God exceptionally riveting mind bender that deserves to be seen on any list when talking about the best modern Film Noirs. It's definitely a much more darker portrayal of human nature than I expected, and the study of Gene Hackman's inept private eye is matched perfectly with the bleak and ominous tone of a series of complicated murder mysteries. Hackman is a considerably less flashy performer than many of the other legendary scenery chewers of his generation - De Niro, Pacino, Nicholson - and the tremendous amount of subtleties that he often displays works in favor to creating a world weary, tragic character whose blind tenacity ultimately becomes the catalyst to his downfall. The scene in which Harry tells his wife about tracking down his father is a prime example of method acting -- subdued with a kind of quiet emotional intensity, not the sort of screaming histrionics that one sees too often nowadays.

Just a great new-Hollywood film. It really captures the movement of the 70s and ranks up there with Chinatown, The Conversation, etc. Gene Hackman puts in a solid performance and the way the case unfolds is hard to follow (in a good way) so the film demands multiple screenings. I also love the score; but that was jsut icing on a very good cake.
