Perhaps my least favourite Powell/Pressburger film, this is the tale of the capture and removal of a German general from Nazi-occupied Crete in WW2. The story was made to seem very pedestrian and predictable, I'm sure that as it's based on a true story, it wasn't in the least pedestrian at the time.

Any impression of actuality or of sharp conflict is missing, the direction relying mainly on a coating of naive boisterous humour and the personalities of the leading players.

Not Powell and Pressburger's finest hour as film-makers but a lively war-time romp nevertheless. The main trouble is that in portraying the Cretans as sympathethic, weloming hosts to the allied soldiers - it alson makes all concerned look more than a little camp - especially young Dirk Bogarde in his capes and patisan attire.

Confident war mission movie with solid performances. Dirk Bogarde is his familiar self in a genre he is well versed with.
