Hot off the wheels from Howard Hawks' 1932 Scarface, Paul Muni gives a much more focused and compelling performance as the titular fugitive. The story is based on true events, and the injustices it evokes on the big screen infuriate accordingly. The female roles are (unfortunately) secondary to all other plot elements, but the film still warrants a viewing if but for the political uproar it brought about after exposing the chain gang system.

The title says it all: Paul Muni is wrongly convicted of a crime and sentenced to the chain gang, an incredibly brutal and unfair form of punishment, from which he subsequently escapes. Using skills he learned in the army during WWI, he builds himself a career as a civil engineer and rises to prominence - until he is betrayed (as is, of course, inevitable). After a creaky start, director Mervyn Le Roy keeps things hopping along, laying out the clichés that would mark all future depictions of the chain gang, including musically. Warner Brothers subsequently built their image on this kind of social problem picture, crusading against injustice, and was sued by the state of Georgia for the effort. A tough and gritty '30s prison flick.

A decorated WWI veteran falls victim to miserable economic circumstances during the Great Depression and inadvertently resorts to crime to survive. He's arrested and forced to labor in a Georgia chain gang. He escapes to a different state and eventually reforms himself as a prosperous model citizen. But he's always cognizant of the fact that he's still wanted by Georgia. This 1930s movie moves fairly quickly and competently and was based on a best-selling non-fiction novel authored by that same person. Btw, the box office hit film was banned in the state where he had served time. Actor Paul Muni gives a solid performance throughout and never bores you. I saw it a couple of years ago and wouldn't mind viewing it again.
