The film suggests the denial of the common worker, whose service to industry is only as worthy as his social status.

Excellent film - should be seen anyone 12+ years old. Film aficionado's or those in the industry should study this flick made in the early years of sound. Based on a book, this is an exposè of the prison system of Georgia, USA during the depression. In it's time it was as influential as Sinclair's The Jungle or Erin Brockovitch. Though the script and editing are 2nd rate, the acting, directing, cinematography, sound, and editing make up for it. A classic.

Stunning film from the early 30's - thought provoking, moving, beautifully filmed - also arguably the most powerful "social message" film going.... They just don't make 'em like this anymore!

Such a great film with such a downfall of a man. One of the best endings caused by a light breaking while delivering the final line. Based on a true story that finally made him free. An unbelievable film

A decorated WWI veteran falls victim to miserable economic circumstances during the Great Depression and inadvertently resorts to crime to survive. He's arrested and forced to labor in a Georgia chain gang. He escapes to a different state and eventually reforms himself as a prosperous model citizen. But he's always cognizant of the fact that he's still wanted by Georgia. This 1930s movie moves fairly quickly and competently and was based on a best-selling non-fiction novel authored by that same person. Btw, the box office hit film was banned in the state where he had served time. Actor Paul Muni gives a solid performance throughout and never bores you. I saw it a couple of years ago and wouldn't mind viewing it again.
