Not among the best of Tennessee Williams adaptations, but I have to admit it's better than the play.

Juke joint perfomer "Snakeskin" (Brando) Xavier drifts into a small town looking for work, inadvertently touching off a powder keg of sexual frustration, bitterness, prejudice and revenge. Tennessee Williams' drama may be too florid for some, but Lumet's taut, spare direction keeps things from spinning out of control (until such time as it needs to). The cast is uniformly strong, with Magnani and Brando being the natural standouts.

Not top notch Tennesse Williams, florid and over ripe. Brando, Joanne Woodward, Anna Magnani and Maureen Stapleton do what they can with underwritten parts, Victor Jory is wonderful in a small but showy part practially dripping evil.

The Fugitive Kind doesn't have the intensity and sheer drama of Streetcar but it's an adequate drama on it's own merits.

Maybe if Kazan had directed this movie would have been more exciting, I don't know what the problem was, but this movie is incredibly slow and boring. The story seemed good, but I couldn't follow it very well.
