NOT to be confused with HOT FUZZ lol. Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time... gee. Typical 70s sitcom cop caper. Funny, but tedious.

Ed McBain's 87th Precinct comes to the big screen with this surprisingly cheeky crime drama. With a screenplay by McBain himself (going by Evan Hunter) it retains the gritty big city atmosphere and offbeat characters. It gets off to a strong start, but isn't quite able to sustain its comic energy. Entertaining, but falls short of what it could have been. Great (if very dated) score by Dave Grusin.

Decent story. Good cast Reynolds, Skerritt, Welch. I like James McEachin in all his bit parts. Raquel Welch's wardrobe in this movie is great. They could have done a lot more with Welch's character and with Yul Brynner's bad guy character. Could have been a lot better, but how can you ever top real quality 1970's chase music from a movie? That's just it you can't.

Ok, so Fuzz definitely won't win any awards for originality or even pushing the envelope, but it doesn't need to. It's one of the most enjoyable cop dramedies that Robert Altman never made. It really does feel Altmanesque to me at times (if there is such a thing). The word is that its two main stars, Burt Reynolds and Raquel Welch, didn't get along so well during the filming. That may or may not be true, but I know that they don't really share any scenes together at all, so I couldn't see it as being a major problem. Apparently, the film is based on a series of novels by Ed McBain. There were some changes, as always, including giving the city an official place and setting, as well as pushing it into more comedic territory. It's tone is definitely not consistent, and it doesn't really succeed at any tone it's trying to settle on at the time, but it winds up being fun anyways. That's a pretty tough thing for a dramedy. Yeah it works, but the wheels do squeak a bit.

The greatest problem w/ Fuzz is that it isn't funny enough to be a comedy & it isn't dramatic enough to be a drama. It's sorta like MASH (& that comparison had been made by Roger Ebert too but I was thinking that before I read his review). W/ MASH it works; here it doesn't. A good cast here though w/ Burt Reynolds, Tom Skerritt, Yul Brynner & Raquel Welch but the script is thin & wraps itself up a bit too conveniently. For me it didn't wash but the entire project isn't a loss. It is watchable mostly for those involved but as Bynner said when he was calling in his extortion they're all pretty inept. None of their cases are solved by good investigation just dumb luck. Would have made a good spin off TV show though but that just goes to show you it's not strong enough for a feature film
